What is EPUB?
EPUB open source has gained plenty of popularity, especially when it comes to book sharing amongst readers. Being one of the most popular e-book formats it has also offered a great convenience in reading because the readers can read from preferred e-book reader devices.
The e-book readers are great tools for people who are constantly on the go but love to read, and Amazon offers one of the best e-book reader devices with its various models of Kindle. However, if you own a Kindle, you will not be able to open the EPUB files because Amazon’s Kindle does not support it. So, though the Kindle e-book readers, which come in attractive packages, provide good performance, they have one drawback – the inability to support the EPUB format.
EPUB is free to use and most e-book readers support it. It is also a common e-book format for free books such as texts on public domain sites like Project Gutenberg. Kindle owners might be disappointed to learn that they cannot read them. But there is no reason to despair because you can still enjoy reading them using MOBI files.
For all the Kindle users with a library of EPUB files, there is good news. These unreadable EPUB files can be converted into formats that your Kindle will be able to read. The simplest method is to convert these files into MOBI with the help of several programs which allow you to convert them.
i. Using Calibre to Convert EPUB Files
One of the most used programs for converting EPUB files to MOBI files is the Calibre. Readers can use this program to organize their e-books and get them converted into different formats. Calibre is available for free downloading online on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.
Here’s how you go about getting it done:
Step 1: Download Calibre and install it.
Step 2: When Calibre is run for the first time, it will ask your language of preference. It will also ask you to select a folder which you want to utilize as your e-book library.
Step 3: Now select your primary reader.
Step 4: A large icon on the top left of the main screen allows you to select and add books. Add the EPUB files which you want to convert.
Step 5: Select the EPUB files that you need to convert and then click on the “Convert Books” icon present in the top bar.
Step 6: Select the format from the vast array of options that is presented to you. If you have already selected your primary reader as Kindle, then Calibre will automatically decide on the MOBI format. Now click OK at the bottom-right of the screen.
Step 7: Once your files have been converted to readable format, select “Connect / Share” from the top-right of the screen and send them to your Kindle reader from within Calibre. You can also aim your device at the correct folder to achieve the same result.
ii. Using Kindle Previewer to Convert EPUB Files
Amazon’s own Kindle Previewer is another program which is reliable for converting EPUB files to MOBI. It is available for free downloading for both Windows and Mac OS X. This application allows the readers to preview how e-books will appear on various models of Kindle. For the EPUB file to be previewed accurately, the Kindle Previewer will convert it into MOBI automatically.
Follow these simple steps to preview your EPUB files:
Step 1: Download Kindle Preview and install it. From the main page select “Open Book”.
Step 2: The conversion process takes a short time after which a dialog box will open. It will provide you the link of the folder where the new file is saved. Click on the link which will take you to the location.
All you need to do now is to move this MOBI file to your Kindle reader. The simplest way is to plug the reader into your computer and copy and paste the MOBI file.

i. Transferring and opening files using email to your Kindle
Many are not aware of the fact that every Kindle which has been activated with an Amazon account is assigned an e-mail address which is unique. This MOBI file can simply be mailed through e-mail to the relevant Kindle account as an attachment or to your Kindle device.
Step 1 – Download your relevant MOBI files to your computer. You will notice a .MOBI extension after the name of the file. The files are sent as an email attachment or in a Dropbox link in case they are larger in size. You will use the email attachment or the drop box to download your files. When downloading, be careful with the location where you save the MOBI files on your computer. It is always better to save the files to your Documents folder or on the Desktop for easy retrieval later.
Step 2 – Log in to your Kindle account from the Amazon website. This is easy as long as you can remember your log-in details.
Open the link: kindle.amazon.com
Step 3 – Within your Kindle account, find the ‘Your Account’ area and click on it. Scroll down to the Digital Content part and then select ‘Manage Your Kindle’ or click on the Manage Content and ‘Devices’.
Step 4 – You also need to authorize the sender. Next, select ‘Personal Document Settings’. This selection should display a ‘Send to Kindle email Settings’ heading which gives you a list of e-mail addresses which are associated with all your Kindle devices as well as mobile applications. There should be an email with a @Kindle.com to it.
Step 5 – Now use the Approved Personal Document Email List which is further down on your “Manage Content and Devices” page. From this section, you should add your relevant email address to the list. This is the only way that the Kindle device you are using will accept the MOBI files that you intend to read.
Step 6 – Using your mail program, select a ‘Start a new mail’ to the kindle.com address that you found.
Step 7 – Next will be to attach the MOBI file before then sending the email.
Step 8 – Give the program at least five minutes. Then you can select ‘Open your Kindle and Sync’ option. The book you have selected should appear in the Documents section or the Books section from where you can now open and read the MOBI files easily.

You can Add your Mobipocket “.MOBI” e-book through a USB cable to your Kindle:
Transferring and opening the MOBI-files using a USB cable is just as simple as opening via email so you can open it on your Kindle. Simply follow the instructions below that are also adapted from Amazon Help Pages to make the process swift for every interested reader.
- Using a USB cable to connect your Kindle to your PC:
Step 1 – Download your relevant MOBI files to your computer. You will notice a .MOBI extension after the name of the file. The files are sent as an email attachment or in a Dropbox link in case they are larger in size. You will use the email attachment or the Drop box to download your files. When downloading, be careful with the location where you save the MOBI files on your computer. It is always better to save the files to your Documents folder or on the desktop for easy retrieval later.
Step 2 – Using your USB cable, connect your Kindle device to the computer. The device should appear on the computer under the ‘Computer’ section or ‘My Computer’ section for Windows users. If you are a Mac user, then it should show on your desktop.
Step 3 – After confirming that the device has read on your computer, the next step is to open your Kindle drive. Go to Windows Explorer / File Explorer. Your Kindle will either be seen as an additional drive or as a Kindle device. There are so many folders from here, but your aim should be to locate the ‘Documents’ folder if your device is Kindle.
Step 4 – Because you already have your MOBI file downloads ready on the computer, the next step is to find them before you can then copy them to the Kindle document folder. Copying the relevant file or files can be done easily by clicking on it and dragging the file to the folder.
Step 5 – With your file now on your Kindle device, you can use the same method of ejecting the USB from the computer. Once the file has been copied to your device, disconnect it from your PC. When the activity indicator of the USB stops flashing on the Kindle reader, use “Safely Remove Mass Storage Device” in case of Windows or “Eject” in case of Mac and remove the Kindle from your PC.
Step 6 – Your newly purchased book should appear on the list of books in your Kindle library. You can successfully end the process if you can see your MOBI file or files on the Home screen of your Kindle device or in the device’s Documents section. To open, simply click on the file and you can start enjoying your read.
The lists of books that the Kindle provides may take some time to update. In addition, copying a book to the Kindle device does not mean that it will be placed on other devices in your Kindle library.

Step 2: Using a USB cable, connect your Kindle device to your PC. Since the Kindle Fire does not come with a cable, you will need to supply your own cable.
Step 3: Your Kindle screen will show “You can now transfer files from your computer to Kindle”.
Step 4: The Kindle hard drive will be mounted on your PC and displayed as “KINDLE”.
Step 5: Drag and drop the .MOBI file into either of the folders on your Kindle – “Books” or “Documents”.
