Enhanced eBooks are an advanced version of the standard eBooks and interactive eBooks. Standard eBook usually takes the format of the physical paper books we might most likely come across, the only difference in them is that they are readable on electronic devices. They are mostly in the form of PDF documents. Interactive eBooks, on the other hand, take the form of applications which largely use graphics, sound, and animations; they engage the readers both mentally and physically as they read along.
Publishers are working a way out to come up with a very clear difference between interactive and enhanced eBooks. Enhanced eBooks, however, embeds a lot of media content in the form of audio companions and video clips to the standard textual content.
What are some key components that make an enhanced eBook?
- Video companions; Video companions are very common in enhanced eBooks, they come hand in hand with plain texts that are used to communicate different ideas to different people. A good example of an enhanced eBook can be that on recipes on how to prepare different foods. The book will of cause explain the recipes in plain texts; after the detailed explanation, the readers understanding would further be enhanced by video clips demonstrating how the cooking is actually done.
- Audio companions; when the reader is occupied in other activities such as jogging early in the morning and cannot be committed to settling down and reading, the audio companions will do the reading as he or she does the listening. Enhanced eBooks are embedded with narrators which can take the form of male or female voices, the narrators fluently read word by word from one paragraphs to the next paragraphs unfolding new knowledge and information to occupied listeners. This means that one can actually multitask, listening and at the same time engaging in other lighter duties that don’t require much mental concentration. With audio narrators, enhanced eBooks have really solved the challenge of limited time experienced by readers as a result of busy schedules.
- Read along text highlighters; this is yet another powerful feature that is very common with enhanced eBooks. As the narrator voice reads across successive lines of a book, the read along text highlighter highlights the read texts in a given standard color. The reader can actually confirm with the read along text highlighters whether the voice narrator is reading one word after the other or skipping phrases.
- Background music; this is not the read along narrator but some soft background music (of the authors choice), that plays along as the enhanced eBook’s paragraphs keep unfolding. We should however not that not all enhanced eBooks have these feature embedded.
Why are readers slowly considering enhanced eBooks?
With enhanced eBooks, the reading experience changes from imagination to reality. Readers, therefore, come out with a solid understanding of the concepts being passed across in various books. The embedded videos bring in a practical demonstration of what is explained in plain texts. Reading is becoming more and more attractive since those who blamed boredom as an excuse to not reading can now read in an enhanced and a fun way.
People with physical disabilities such as vision and hearing can also be at par with those who are physically fit. Where one is blind, he or she can listen to information; and where one is deaf, he or she can read and watch thereby gaining new knowledge and information.
